This post provides the most recent campaign financial updates for candidates in the September 13th primary elections, which were mostly on the Democratic side. Before I get to that, I have added some analysis.
A reader of the blog suggested that it would be interesting to see how the votes received by the various candidates compared with what they had spent during 2018, right up to the primary. The State Board of Elections does not yet have final statewide primary results posted, so the vote totals (estimated at 99 percent) are taken from press reports. The final vote numbers will go up a bit for all statewide candidates, so the cost per vote will decrease a little for all of them. Here is a summary:
Governor – Democratic primary

Erie County Court Judge – Democratic, Republican, Working Families, Independence, Reform primaries
Suzanne Maxwell Barnes, Endorsed Democrat. Once again failed to file a timely financial report. Through August 31st spent $85,497. Votes received in all contested primaries: 44,431 Cost per vote (through August 31): $1.92
Debra Givens, Endorsed Republican. Spent: $117,917 Votes received: 39,878 Cost per vote: $2.96

Candidates involved in the primary were required by September 24th to report on their campaign finances as of September 20th. The next filing deadline, which will cover all November candidates, is due on October 5th.
